Power output or rated power can be stated in many different ways, and as such does not necessarily indicate how loud or effective the unit will be, which can be confusing when attempting to compare models.   

Maximum SPL (Sound Pressure Level) indicates how loud the megaphone is, and this will directly affect the effective range in a given environment.
As a guide, an extra 10dB sounds about TWICE as loud and about an extra 6dB is required to double the effective range in a given environment.
