Soundfield Systems for Schools

Benefits of a Soundfield System for your Teaching Environment

Sound field voice reinforcement systems provide mild amplification but need to be designed to optimise speech intelligibility. The Sound field system amplifies the wide natural dynamics of the human voice with minimal distortion.

Natural speech reproduction demands a wide frequency response throughout the entire transmission chain. The highest quality microphone, transmitter, receiver, and loudspeakers are essential to ensure that the full voice range, (especially the critical 16 consonant sounds), is reproduced. Soundfield Systems can use radio or infra-red transmission from a personal microphone worn by the teacher.

A suitable choice of speakers is critical to realize the full benefits of Sound Field amplification. Loudspeakers specifically designed for maximum speech intelligibility and uniform distribution of sound in classroom-sized spaces are necessary. (eg Armstrong NXT sound panels)

An extensive range of accessories enables the Sound-field system to be adapted to a wide range of applications. To allow for multipurpose use, the systems can be fitted with input sockets for connecting audiovisual equipment such as a tape recorder, TV, laptop or interactive whiteboard (eg. SMART Board™). In addition it is possible to connect the personal FM system of a hearing impaired child or an induction loop system for hearing aid users.

Besides classroom use, the Soundfield system can be used during extracurricular activities, as an aid for guest lecturers, or for amplification of audio-visual equipment.

Portable Soundfield systems are also available where permanent installations are less practical or not cost effective. Click here to see a selection of Soundfield Classroom Products available at our online shop.

Government Legislation

The recently published ‘Building Bulletin 93 - Section 1’ sets the Department for Education & Skills (DfES) legislative standards for the acoustics of new school buildings.

"The overall objective of the performance standards in Section1.1 (of BB93) is to provide acoustic conditions in schools that…facilitate clear communication of speech between teacher and student…and do not interfere with study activities."

The 'A.B.L.E.' initiative 'A Better Learning Environment' highlights Armstrong's market leading range of education specific acoustic ceilings products, emphasises a highly effective and innovative new i-ceilings Sound Field solution (specifically recommended in Section 8 of BB93) and offers educational, architectural and acoustic specifiers with a complete package of advice, service and design assistance.
